About savannah country club
The story of the Savannah Country Club begins in the 1920s when Henry C. Walthour acquired land on Wilmington Island to develop a prestigious community centered around the General Oglethorpe Hotel and its Donald Ross-designed golf course. Despite early success, the hotel struggled after the 1929 stock market crash, changing ownership several times before being renovated in 1965 by William Lattimore, who upgraded the golf course and renamed the property the Savannah Inn and Country Club. Later, it became the Sheraton Hotel before closing in the 1980s and eventually reopening as luxury condominiums, Wilmington Plantation. The golf course, however, remained a constant, evolving into the Wilmington Island Club with modern amenities. In 2018, under new ownership, it was renamed the Savannah Country Club to honor its history while incorporating a modern approach to dining and events.
